I am a very liberal minded individual. I believe people have the freedom to express themselves; I hold that principle paramount. However I am unsure how to react to a certain situation.
A federal riding association of the NDP, in the riding of Nanaimo-Cowichan had created a policy calling Canadian troops terrorists. As reported in the Globe and Mail the reference made was in a resolutions preamble that the association drafted; it read: “In such a situation, Canadian troops end up acting like terrorists, destroying communities, killing and maiming innocent people.”
Going on that principle the NDP riding association had the right to make that claim; yet I know that statement to be wrong.
In this exact case, I feel because the NDP riding association is in a relationship with the Canadian Government that it is contradictory to make the negative connotation and indeed liable comment that it had.
The association purposely applied and used "terrorism" to stregthen their argument. For if Canadian forces are terrorists, as they state, then Afghanistan is an illegitimate, illegal, and immoral mission. The contradiction arises because the NDP riding association made no attempt to file any type of suit against a government, which in it's eyes, was committing an act of terrorism. Therefore, the NDP were fine with a government that broke the law, sponsered "terrorists," and in effect was itself made up of "terrorists"; but were against "terrorists."
I feel that this justifies my remaining committal to the principle of freedom of speech, while illustrating that the speech in this case should not be permitted. The NDP riding association committed a crime against Canadian patriotism and dignity and committed a crime against logic.
