Allowing Canadians to be killed by another government, allowing another government to take away a Canadian citizens right to life is wrong. This is not some issue that concerns a small portion of the population, this is not some issue that will cost Canadians a few more pennies at the pump; this reversal of forty years of the Canadian government standing up for Canadians who are to be executed is wrong and immoral.
A Canadian is still a Canadian if she is in another country. A Canadian is still a Canadian if he commits a crime. A Canadian is a human being, and no government, no artificial construct that only has its authority because of the peoples consent is justified to take away its citizens lives.
Besides the fact that democratic countries have a record of making mistakes and executing innocent people, the very principle of execution is founded not upon justice but vengeance. Vengeance is an eye for an eye, it is blood lust with no other purpose then to stop a life. In contrast Justice is to pursue the betterment of society, it is reason tempered by value. Where death contributes nothing to society but another casket; life imprisonment offers a contribution to society, no matter how small, it is just as invaluable as that of the freest man's. As vengeance is short-sighted and valueless, Justice is enrobed in the nobility of reason and must be promoted by all.
In allowing Canadians to be executed in other nations, the Conservative government in Canada headed by our Prime Minister Stephen Harper is the worst type of government, an unjust one.
