Letter To The Editor: Youth Crime Act

On September 22 Stephen Harper announced that the Conservative Party is for sentencing 14 year olds that are found guilty of serious offenses to life in prison. Fourteen year olds to life.

Considering Stephen Harper has numerously referred to young teenagers as children, it is incomprehensible how a leader of a party, of such a party built on family values can propose sentencing children to life in prison.

Beyond party lines I still can't comprehend the inhumane perspective that would justify treating someone who is still in puberty as an adult. Why stop at 14 then? Why don't we send ten year olds to life in jail? Or eight year olds? We don't because age matters. Developmental stages matter.

Any psychologist will tell you a 14 year old does not have the mental capacity to be fully responsible for their actions like an adult. And as such it would not only be irrational to punish someone, like a fourteen year old, who can't even fully understand their actions, to life in jail, but it would be wrong. This Conservative Party is wrong rationally, and more importantly, wrong morally.

14 year olds can already receive life sentences under the current YCJA.
