The Joke of Unreported Crime: Holland vs Del Mastro

Liberal MP Mark Holland out performs the sweaty and nervous Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro in a debate over Stockwell Day's comments about unreported crime.

At 5:30 in the video, Mark Holland makes this interesting observation:

"Mr. Day, yesterday, said that we needed more prisons so that we could put away the people who are committing unreported crimes. How are you going to arrest and convict people who are committing crimes that haven't been unreported? Are you going to round up everybody who looks suspicious?"

White collar crime might be a good place to start:

The PricewaterhouseCoopers 2009 Global Economic Crime Survey : Canada fares very badly in this survey, with 56% of respondents reporting fraud. Only three of the 54 countries surveyed fared worse: Russia (71%), South Africa (62%) and Kenya (57%).

What exactly are you suggesting?

That some of those people should go to jail.
In another example, Hells Angel drug dealer, John Punko had his sentence of 14-month sentence changed to five years. Maybe this is just the start of of actually putting bad people in jails.

I agree with you, so how do should we go about finding these unreported criminals? Arrest all white collar workers?

I've given examples of criminals we both agree should get jail time yet you choose to focus on the politics.

Riden, I apologize. I thought you had had a purpose to your examples. I guess I should lay off cticizing people who just rant random statements.

You mentioned white collar crime was a good place to start, I took that to mean you wanted to lock people up without a report of a crime. It was my mistake, I gave you too much credit, it turns out you're much less coherent than I thought.

It's not that. I am a hideous Conservative troll paid directly by the government, who takes his marching orders directly through SUN media and a secret decoder ring. It's simply that I don't choose to play your game.

I guess my comments about white collar crime come too close to ADSCAM and that triggers certain defense mechanisms in Liberals.

Coherency - 0, Ridenrain - 1

This isn't difficult, Scott: you remove the disincentives to reporting a crime.

Which this government has begun to do. Merely one example is the move to eliminate the 2-for-1 time served credit that has resulted in so many criminals serving only a portion of their actual sentence.

Patrick please provide one piece of evidence that suggests people aren't reporting crime because there are disincentives.
